Former CEO Continues Planning for Orchard Place's Future

Earl Kelly

Earl Kelly's relationship with Orchard Place began in the '60s.

For 35 years, Earl Kelly dedicated his life to the children and families served by Orchard Place.

When he began at Orchard Place as a casework therapist back in the '60s, the organization was still fairly new.

"The work is so intense, you develop a real passion for mental health in a residential setting because you're so closely involved in the life of the (child)," Earl notes.

He recalls the emotional experience of seeing children arrive at Orchard Place, often with plastic bags of clothing as their only possessions.

"The whole mission of Orchard Place is to help [children] to find themselves, their identity and how that works with their family, and get them back to their community," Earl says, noting that while the organization has evolved, its purpose has remained the same.

Ensuring the Work Continues

When Earl retired as chief executive officer in 2004, he knew he wasn't done championing the organization's mission. For that reason, he included a gift to Orchard Place in his will.

"The sustainability of the agency over a long period of time is crucial," he says.
