Generations of Caring

When Bryan Shiffler's great-grandmother, Elizabeth Mann, founded the Home for Friendless Children in 1886, she was unaware that her daughter, granddaughter and great-grandson would ultimately provide continuous leadership to the organization, now known as Orchard Place, over 130 years of its existence—but that's what happened.

Bryan and his late wife, Lyn, helped with many of Orchard Place's special events and have even hosted events in their home. Having watched Bryan’s great-grandmother’s involvement with Orchard Place over the years and witnessing her undying love for the children, it was impossible not to feel as if Orchard Place was "just part of the family."

Including Orchard Place In Their Estate Plans

As Bryan and Lyn sat down to discuss their estate plans, it was a given that a portion of their estate would pass to Orchard Place, to help make services available to children who will need the specialized care provided by the agency. As a board member, Bryan feels a strong responsibility to contribute to Orchard Place's annual fund drive each year. The gift Bryan and Lyn chose to include in their will was a way for them to continue their annual gifts long after they are gone.

As part of their planning process, Bryan and Lyn made a point of including their only child, Kirby, in the discussion. They felt it was important to teach her through example that giving back to the community is the right thing to do.

Like her father, Kirby grew up with Orchard Place as part of her life. Already following the example set by her parents, several years ago Kirby and her husband began making their own annual contribution to Orchard Place.

The Shifflers' estate gift to Orchard Place entitles them to membership in the Elizabeth Mann Society, named, of course, after Bryan's great-grandmother. Certainly, Elizabeth would be proud to know that when she opened her home to the infant on the doorstep in 1886, she was also opening the hearts and minds of future family members who would continue her good works in support of Orchard Place for generations to come.
